Strengthen Alabama Homes Grant: How to Apply for Up to $10,000 Toward a FORTIFIED Roof

Two-story home with a shingle roof lit up at dusk

Quick answer: Strengthen Alabama Homes is a program run by the Alabama Department of Insurance that has provided grants of up to $10,000 to help eligible homeowners replace their roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard. Applications open on scheduled dates by county, and funding is limited, so preparation matters.

Who is eligible?

Program rules can change each year, and the Alabama Department of Insurance updated its regulations for 2026, so always check StrengthenAlabamaHomes.com for current requirements. Program guidance has generally required:

  • An owner-occupied, single-family primary residence in an eligible Alabama county
  • Active homeowners insurance when you apply, and wind coverage once the work is complete
  • A home in good repair that is not listed for sale
  • No roof insurance claim filed in the months before applying

Condos, townhomes, mobile homes and rental properties have generally not been eligible. There have been no income limits.

How the application process works

  1. Apply on your county’s open date. Applications open at a set time and funds can go quickly.
  2. Upload your documents within the required window.
  3. Choose a certified FORTIFIED evaluator to inspect your home.
  4. Complete the evaluation.
  5. Get bids from contractors on the program’s approved list.
  6. Receive your award letter and choose your contractor.
  7. Complete the roof within the program’s deadline.
  8. Get your FORTIFIED designation and send it to your insurance agent for your discount.

Tips to be ready on application day

  • Create your account and read the rules before your county opens.
  • Have your deed or proof of ownership, your insurance declarations page and photo ID ready to upload.
  • Know which evaluators and approved contractors serve your area.
  • Ask your insurance agent what discount a FORTIFIED designation would bring.

What if I do not get a grant?

You can still choose a FORTIFIED roof when you replace your roof. You will still qualify for the insurance discount Alabama requires insurers to offer for FORTIFIED homes. Read FORTIFIED Roofs in Alabama: Cost, Discounts and How to Get One.
